Basket Sofa

Basket is a furniture collection designed by Joe Colombo for the brand Gubi. The series includes a three-seater sofa, a two-seater sofa and a lounge chair, all sharing the same structure. Each element now consists of a steel skeleton covered by a hand-woven rattan leather.The Basket collection made its debut at the end of the 1960s; at the time, Joe Colombo designed these furnishings with different materials from those of today, but its distinctive feature was already well established. The Danish company decided to revive the design icons of the last century while remaining faithful to the original idea, a homage to the classic hand-weaving technique used in rattan basketry.Organic lines, a modernist aesthetic and a highly innovative approach to the chosen material, Colombo focused on these characteristics to increase the appeal of this furniture line. The design demonstrates the balance between technique and material, combining traditional craftsmanship methods and one of the oldest known materials: a perfect marriage of craftsmanship and industry. The Basket seats are completed with soft, rounded cushions on the seat and back, and cylindrical cushions that wrap around the sides.
