Akari is a broad collection created by the famous Japanese-born American designer Isamu Noguchi, produced by the famous Vitra brand. Lamps made of washi paper, some of which with painted parts. Some models come with bamboo ends. In 1951 the Japanese-born American artist Isamu Noguchi designed the Akari Light Sculptures, a series of works handmade with washi paper including over 100 table, floor and ceiling lamps. The artist named these works “akari”, a Japanese word similar to the English word “light”, that recalls the concepts of brightness and lightness. The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are a series of lamps handcrafted from traditional washi paper by Japanese craftsmen. “Through the magic of paper, the hardness of electricity is transformed back into the light of our origin: the sun” (Noguchi).The body of the lamps is made of bamboo and steel wire.
