1972 is an iconic suspension lamp designed by renowned designer Paavo Tynell and produced by the famous brand Gubi. 1972 is a lamp that features a shade made of bamboo, a fabric cord, and brass details. In the 1972 lamp, in both styles, there is a central core that holds the shade in place, while a polished brass rosette sits atop the wire, connecting the light to the ceiling. The shade was updated with bamboo, a material that shares the visual quality, durability, and flexibility of aspen, but is fast-growing and therefore more rapidly renewable. As with the other Tynell 9205 and 9602 lamps, the bamboo slats are hand-stitched into a pleated mat and hand-attached to the wire frame, with a linen lining in between. Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was an industrial designer, known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design and affectionately nicknamed "the man who enlightened Finland." Throughout 2023, GUBI is exploring and celebrating Paavo Tynell's legacy with the launch of seven masterpieces. This has allowed the design of the original pieces to be brought to life in all their power.
