What is Scandinavian design?

A Scandinavian design interior is known for its emphasis on simplicity, minimalism and functionality. The style is also characterized by the use of natural materials such as wood, hemp, jute, linen, and leather. It originated in the Scandinavian countries in the 1930s and has since become popular around the world. In Scandinavia, winters are cold and long and natural light is scarce. That is why the main characteristics of the Scandi style are coziness, openness and clarity, with nature as the main character. Many people like the Scandinavian style because it not only combines decoration with nature, but also accentuates the practical.

Scandinavian living: Hygge = Coziness

A Scandinavian house is easily recognized by the combination of different natural materials that provide a comfortable and homely appearance. A wooden wall or floor is often combined with pillows and blankets made of cotton and linen and soft wool carpets and wooden lamps. They all ensure that your home looks cozy, modern and clean. Simple decoration is also preferable to elaborate decoration because this style is all about simplicity. Place soft pillows and soft throws on your couch. They contribute to the homely atmosphere and provide extra comfort while relaxing on the couch.

Wood and plants

With a simple, wooden coffee table you can give your living room a natural and pure feeling, opting for glass vases and candles on the table. For houseplants, put them in a bamboo or seagrass basket. When it comes to color, choose neutral and soft color tones such as white, cream, light yellow, light blue or green. These colors work best with a Scandinavian decor.

Furniture for a Scandinavian interior

Since the sofa is the focal point of any living room, it is worth investing in a large and beautiful sofa. There you can have a nice chat with your family and friends, while enjoying a cup of tea and a cookie(s). White and neutral tones are common and central to the Scandinavian style. Go for Scandi furniture in light natural beech or birch wood and combine them with fabrics such as wool, cotton or linen.

Lighting in a Scandinavian living room
